Brimham Rocks is located in the heart of the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, nestled within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a fantastic spot for families looking for a blend of adventure and natural splendour, providing both peaceful surroundings and a plethora of activities to engage little explorers. Our children Matilda and Barney loved venturing around Brimham Rocks but if you have kids under the age of 5 it can be challenging to tempt them away from some of the climbing.

This site, once submerged beneath seas and shaped by the elements, stands as a testament to the transformative power of nature, providing families with an adventurous and educational outdoor experience.

What is There to Do For Families?

For families with children like Matilda and Barney, Brimham Rocks offers an array of engaging activities suitable for all ages. Matilda, at 7, enjoyed the thrill of exploring and climbing the peculiar rock formations and learning about the flora and fauna inhabiting the area, turning every step into a learning opportunity.

Barney, aged 2, was nearly 3 when we visited, and he had a blast running around and enjoying the open spaces, ideal for children with endless energy. The pathways are well-maintained and suitable for younger children, allowing them to experience the joy of the great outdoors safely.

One word of caution. We found it difficult to tempt our little boy away from climbing the rock formations which as parents meant there were a few hairy moments. Nothing is majorly high there’s just an element of climbing involved and with children lacking awareness/fear it can be difficult. We are pretty chilled parents however both our children wanted to do everything so in the interest of safety we probably wouldn’t venture back until Barney was a little more self-sufficient (this is not to say we didn’t love it).

There are also family-centric events and guided tours available, offering a deeper understanding of the site’s geological wonders and history, making the visit both entertaining and educational.

Brimham Rocks is very family-friendly and suitable for younger children. The paths are well-maintained, and there are open spaces for kids to run around. However, parental supervision is always advised, especially near the rock formations, to ensure the safety of the little ones. We found this aspect of Brimham Rocks challenging at times. I do think it depends completely on the temperament of your children. Ours are very strong-willed and outdoorsy so they wanted to do everything; even some of the high rock formations.
