Roberts Park for Families Review

As a family with two small children, we always look for new outdoorsy things to do on the weekend. The excitement when you discover a new place to visit within a radius of your home is something we love.

Roberts Park is a 14 acres public urban park in Saltaire, West Yorkshire, England. Higher Coach Road, Baildon, is to the north and the park is bounded to the south by the River Aire. A pedestrian footbridge crosses the Aire and links the park to the village of Saltaire.

We ventured to Roberts Park at the back end of the Summer months to meet friends who live locally.

We really enjoyed our visit to Roberts Park. It’s a beautiful park to walk around. Wonderful wildlife throughout, a cafe (overlooking the cricket field) and a bandstand. You can also walk right along the river which is a flat, even surface. Lastly, you can even venture over the bridge into Saltire which is a quirky place with plenty to do. Just over the bridge is the Salt Mills which have been converted into boutique shops and galleries. The building is a relic of Bradford’s industrial past.

Where is the park?

The park is located between Saltire & Baildon in the Bradford region of West Yorkshire.
The canal side and the River Aire both run close by (and are supposed to be great for cycling). The Park is easy to reach by car and also accessible via train as Saltaire has a station close by.

What is there to do?

As soon as you arrive at Roberts Park you will see there’s an abundance of things to do. From the excellent Park Play Area to the circuit around the park. Our children particularly enjoyed the play area. There were swings, slides and various other activities to keep them entertained.

Following time in the play area, we walked around the perimeter of the Park which is a nice, easy stroll for most ability levels. There’s a cafe inside the park named The Half Moon Cafe where we enjoyed coffee and the children’s ice creams. It was a little on the expensive side but it’s the only cafe available within the park so I assume this is due to the demand they receive.

We were incredibly lucky at the time of the visit that the Drighlington Brass Band were performing on the Bandstand. We really enjoyed this and there was a large crowd of people sitting on the grass listening to the music. It created a wonderful atmosphere. I believe the park has regular performances throughout the year so make sure to check the website for when you are planning to visit.

There’s also a skate park at Roberts park however this was not something we visited.

What age group is it suitable for?

Roberts Park is suitable for children of all ages. It’s very flat, easily accessible and safe.

The Play Park has a diverse range of activities for varying age groups. Our children were ranging from 1 to 7 and all had plenty to do within the park.

Overall it’s a nice place to visit for varying age groups.

Would you recommend it?

Yes, of course. If you are looking for a well-kept, fun and free day out then Roberts Park should be on your hit list. There’s a great play park, a beautiful bandstand (if you are lucky there may be a performance on) and a gentle stroll around the perimeter.

You can also access Saltaire easily which is another great place to visit. It’s a really nice, urban park which is suitable for children of all ages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cafe?:

Yes. The Half Moon Cafe is available within the park and serves everything from food to hot and cold drinks. It’s open 7 days a week and has slightly extended hours on a weekend. We found it a little expensive (especially for ice cream) however it’s a convenient stop-off.

What is your favourite part?:

My favourite part was the Bandstand. At the time of the visit, we were fortunate to have the Driglington Brass Band playing who were excellent. The atmosphere around the Bandstand was brilliant and it was great to see families of all ages enjoying the music.

Is it suitable for Dog walkers?

Absolutely. When visiting we saw plenty of dog walkers and it seems a great spot for those with dogs.

How much is it to park?

The Parking at Roberts Park is free on a first come first serve basis however it was full on the day of our visit. We did however manage to find on-street parking available on the Baildon side of the park. This seemed to be readily available.
