Cycling for Families: UK vs. The Netherlands

As a family, we spent the summer camping in France. We love the great outdoors and the French seem to deliver this in a way which is unrivalled by any other country. As part of our journey home, we wanted to tick off a key bucket list item. Cycling in The Netherlands.

As a family, we love cycling and enjoy this from both a recreation and active travel perspective. The latter in the UK requires careful planning and parental safety guidance at all times.

The Netherlands is lauded for its cycling infrastructure and Twitter (X) is rife with videos of those from all walks of life and ability levels cycling. These videos tend to however be city orientated where cycling is the primary mode of transport. On our visit we wanted to see other sides of the Netherlands; particularly the suburbs and how cycling was in these locations.

We spent 5 days in the Netherlands; two of which were spent camping on the fringes of the city of  Valkenburg and two days in the village of Zevenhuizen. We also visited Rotterdam and the city of Delft which has long been on my list of places to visit. I believe this gave us a good grasp of cycling with children in the Netherlands vs. the UK. It’s hard not to be downbeat about what we have in the UK vs. the Netherlands but I also want to be objective.

If you are in the UK I will say that cycling is a fantastic way to spend time together as a family, enjoy the outdoors, and stay active.

However, the experience is vastly different to the Netherlands and other mainland European countries. Let’s dive into the differences, challenges, and what families can expect when pedalling through these nations.

Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds Review For Families:

Kirkstall Abbey Leeds

Leeds, a vibrant city in West Yorkshire, England, is home to several historical landmarks that offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. Among these notable attractions is Kirkstall Abbey, an ancient Cistercian monastery nestled along the banks of the River Aire.

Kirkstall Abbey holds immense historical and architectural significance, making it an ideal destination for families seeking a unique and educational experience. The ruins are fascinating to explore, and there are plenty of places for kids to run around and play. It was a sunny Saturday morning when we set off on our family escapade to this historical gem. Kirkstall Abbey was once one of the largest and most important abbeys in England. Today, the ruins are a popular tourist destination, and they offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.

If you’re looking for a place to visit with your family, Kirkstall Abbey is a great option. The abbey is open year-round, and admission is free for those with a Leeds postcode. Those from out of the region (like ourselves) had to pay a small entrance fee to enter the inner grounds of the Abbey. There’s also a visitor centre on-site, which has more information about the abbey’s history and highlights.

Golden Acre Park, Leeds Review For Families

Golden Acre Park

If you are looking for a place to spend a nice couple of hours to slow down and unwind, you should definitely visit Golden Acre Park. It’s a beautiful outdoor space whatever the season. With lots of natural vegetation, wetland areas complete with lily pads, a wonderful lake and a diverse range of flora and fauna, this place is perfect for families to relax and enjoy.

And yes, there is no play area for the kids in the park. So, if your definition of a park must include a playground, then this place may not be for you. But, if you wish to spend some time in raw nature, breathe in fresh air and cherish the exotic and vibrant views of the gardens, then Golden Acre Park is a must-visit.

We happen to visit the park quite a few times. Being the itinerary man, I had done my research about what’s there to do in the park before we first visited. I knew there wasn’t much for Barney and Matilda to do. And honestly, I wasn’t sure how they’d like it. But, when we saw them feeding the ducks and giggling with those tame squirrels roaming around, we thought we’d made up for it.
