Greenhead Park is a delightful destination for families looking for a fun-filled day outdoors. Greenhead Park welcomes visitors with open arms. Exploring new family-friendly parks is always a joy, and our recent visit to Greenhead Park in Huddersfield left us thoroughly impressed. Its expansive green spaces, serene lakes, and charming attractions create an ideal setting for families to unwind, play, and connect. As a family that values outdoor adventures and quality time, we were eager to explore all that this park had to offer. 

From historical significance to modern facilities, Greenhead Park seemed to promise a mix of nostalgia and excitement. This park has undergone a splendid restoration, reclaiming its former glory and transforming it into a haven for locals and visitors alike. Where is Greenhead Park located?

Located about half a mile away from Huddersfield’s city centre, the park is easily accessible whether you’re a local or just passing through. You can either take a leisurely walk or hop on a bus from the town centre, and voila – you’ll find yourself at the main park gates on Trinity Street, ready to embark on your adventure.

Greenhead Park History

Greenhead Park’s story is one of dedication, community spirit, and the vision of creating a public space that fosters enjoyment and togetherness. Formally opened on September 27, 1884, the park’s history dates back to efforts that spanned over 15 years prior. The park’s inception began in 1870, thanks to the endeavours of Alderman Thomas Denham. He secured access to around 15 acres of parkland at Greenhead Hall through personal leasing negotiations with the Ramsden estate.

The early days of the park saw it host a variety of events, including band concerts, flower shows, and galas. Despite its recreational use, animals continued to graze alongside the visitors. Alderman Denham’s aspiration was always to establish a proper public park for Huddersfield. Negotiations for land purchase began as early as 1869, but it wasn’t until January 1881 that the Huddersfield Corporation successfully acquired 30 acres of land from the Ramsden estate.

The park’s layout and design were entrusted to Borough Surveyor Richard Dugdale, who meticulously crafted every aspect, from the layout to the architecture and even the placement of benches. Many of the park’s original features, such as the entrance lodge, Italian Gardens, main lake, and octagonal bandstand, still stand today.

Greenhead Park offers various play areas suitable for children of different ages. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that younger kids can enjoy their playtime without the worry of getting knocked over by older children. 

An expansive playground, located adjacent to the charming Cafe in the Park, offers an array of delights for children of all ages.Our little ones, Matilda and Barney, had an absolute blast exploring the diverse play areas and trying out the different equipment. There’s a zip wire, a play tower, swings, and even picnic tables for us to catch our breaths. 

The area for under-5s provided a safe haven for our littlest adventurer, Barney.

Miniature Train Adventures

The miniature railway, chugging along a 1/3 mile track, delighted Matilda and Barney. We hopped on for a ride, and even Matilda’s heart found joy in the small train’s journey. The tickets were reasonable – just £2 per ride and a family pass for £5. Volunteers from the Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers run it, and their dedication to the little train is heartwarming.

This charming train takes passengers on a scenic ride along the track, offering families a unique way to experience the park’s beauty. While enjoying the ride, you’ll be captivated by the park’s scenic beauty and the historical significance of the station behind the Refreshment Rooms building.

Ornamental Lake

Speaking of water, the park’s ornamental lake is a sight to behold. Home to an array of wildlife, from ducks to moorhens, this serene oasis is the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful moment of reflection.  Feeding the ducks is a cherished activity, and visitors are encouraged to opt for duck pellets – a healthier alternative to bread.

The lakeside area is a particularly popular spot for families, as it offers stunning views of the lake and the surrounding park.  We had a relaxing time sitting by the peaceful lake, taking in the stunning views. Just remember, it’s best to keep your furry friends out of the water to ensure the harmony of the ecosystem.

Skatepark Thrills

Greenhead Park’s skatepark is a hub of youthful energy and adrenaline-pumping action. While Matilda and Barney enjoyed watching the skillful manoeuvres of the local skaters. Matilda, however, was showing off her bicycle skills on the nearby bike path. She was having a lot of fun, and we were impressed by her skills. It’s an area that adds vibrancy and diversity to the park’s offerings.

Bike Friendly Paths

For cycling enthusiasts, Greenhead Park extends a warm welcome. Its pathways are bicycle-friendly, offering a unique way to explore the park’s expanse. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or introducing your family to this healthy pursuit, the park’s scenic beauty adds a touch of adventure to your ride.  We loved exploring the park on our bikes and seeing all the different things that the park has to offer. The park is so vast, and there are always new things to see and do.

Greenhead Park offers two cafes where you can grab a quick bite or enjoy a leisurely meal.

Public Restrooms

Strategically placed throughout the park, public toilets ensure convenience during your visit. One facility is conveniently located near the Cafe in the Park, while another resides at the opposite end of the Refreshment Rooms building. Both locations offer wheelchair-accessible stalls and baby changing stations, catering to families with young children.

Please note that the opening hours of the public toilets are subject to seasonal changes and may be limited during certain times. While the council aims to keep the toilets open as much as possible, it’s advisable to plan your visit with the restroom availability in mind.

Access and Parking

Getting to the park is a breeze, whether on foot or by bus. Frequent bus services make it easy for families to reach the park from Huddersfield town centre. While cars aren’t allowed in the park, there are nearby parking options, including a small Pay & Display car park. We appreciate the provision of disabled parking bays for those who need them.

Ah, that’s a tough one! Each member of our family had their own favourite moments at Greenhead Park. Matilda and Barney loved spending time at the playground near the Café in the Park. Matilda enjoyed the zip wire and play tower, while Barney had a blast in the under-5s play area. For me and Beth, we cherished the tranquil lakeside view. It’s a wonderful spot to relax and take in the scenery. With so much to offer, it’s hard to pick just one favourite part!

Is there parking available?

Yes, parking is available near the park. Cars are not allowed inside the park, but there is on-street parking available. Some of these spaces have time limits. The nearest parking lot in the town centre is Springwood, which is a short walk away. There is also a small pay-and-display parking lot behind the Conservatory, and if you dine at The Park café, you can get an hour of parking refunded.
