The History of Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm has an inspiring history that showcases the dedication and hard work of volunteers. Established in 1980 with a £5,000 donation from Leeds City Council, the farm started with just one caravan as accommodation.

In 1981, it was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds. Over the years, the farm expanded with the addition of a hut in 1986. Through relentless fundraising efforts, a timber frame building called the Epicentre was constructed in 1999, providing offices, education spaces, and meeting rooms. Further fundraising led to the construction of new animal buildings in 2004.

Today, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm stands as a flourishing institution, offering a haven for families, educational opportunities, and care for its animal residents. Its remarkable journey from humble beginnings to a thriving community space is a testament to the dedication and support of volunteers and the local community.

Animal Encounters Galore

One of the highlights of Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is the opportunity to meet a variety of farm animals. From alpacas and goats to sheep, pigs, hens, donkeys, and ducks, the farm is a haven for animal lovers.

Barney was over the moon as he fed and petted the friendly donkeys and goats.  Meanwhile, Matilda was thrilled to see the alpacas up close. The farm provides a unique chance for children to learn about and appreciate different animals in a hands-on and engaging way.

We were pleased to see that the animals appeared healthy, well looked after, and had plenty of room to roam and graze. It was truly heartwarming to witness the special connection between the animals and the volunteers who care for them.

Playground Fun

As we explored further, we stumbled upon a small playground. Now, this was a real treat for Barney. Slides, climbing frames, rocking horses, and a roundabout awaited him, and he wasted no time in exploring every nook and cranny. It was heartwarming to witness Barney’s excitement as he played and laughed with his newfound friends. The ample space provided a safe and enjoyable space for children to run around and burn off some energy.

Scenic Walks

The farm is a nature lover’s paradise, with stunning views and enchanting walking routes under the canopy of trees and through the lush fields. It was a perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the tranquillity of the surroundings and appreciate the beauty of nature. The 5-acre coppice provided an even more immersive experience, where we spotted various wildlife species while quietly exploring the area.

Picnic Delights

There’s no better way to enjoy quality family time than with a delightful picnic in the great outdoors. Meanwood Valley Urban Farm offers plenty of idyllic picnic spots, allowing families to relax and savour delicious treats amidst the scenic beauty. Meanwood Valley Urban Farm had thoughtfully provided facilities that elevated our experience even further. The Hungry Hedgehog Café, operated independently, offered a cosy refuge where we could refuel with delicious and healthy meals. The produce used in the café’s offerings was grown right on the farm, adding a touch of freshness and authenticity to our dining experience. The friendly staff left a lasting impression, brightening our day with their kindness and helpfulness.

A Farm Shop awaited us, brimming with toys, gifts, and plants. It was here that we had the opportunity to support the farm by purchasing some of their homegrown produce and fresh farm eggs. It felt like a small gesture, but we knew it made a difference.

A Few Things to Consider

Now, let’s talk about the things we think could be better at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm. Don’t worry, it’s still an amazing place, but there’s always room for improvement, right?

One thing to keep in mind is that it might be better to visit during the summer when there’s more to see. Some areas, like the bird sanctuary garden, are more vibrant during the warmer months. Also, if it’s rainy or chilly, there aren’t many places to seek shelter, so make sure to check the weather before you go.
